L.A. Times Blog: Does Everyone Hate PETA?

Answer: YES! (any sane, rational person with two good brain cells to rub together does!)

The comments from readers are pretty good, more against the lunatic fringe than FOR it. That's great!

If you have not sent in your comments of support to USA Network, please do so. If you have not posted a brief comment on the L.A. Times blog, go on by and do some public education.

Be brief, be factual...this is a great opportunity to connect the dots between PETA and their Rolex wearing cousin, the HSUS.

I Am A Proud Student at SEA KITTEN High School

Kids have a tough time as it is nowadays: peer pressure, picking a college...you know, truly important decisions that will have an impact on the rest of their lives. Teachers, superintendents and school boards are responsible in making sure those kids have the best, safest environment in which to achieve their education...you know, truly important stuff.

However, the lunatic fringe known as PETA, seems to think that changing the name of Spearfish High School in Spearfish, SD, to Sea Kitten High School, ranks right up there with SATs and the other truly important stuff.

Thankfully, high school principal, Steve Morford is not taking them seriously.

Kudos, to you, Principal Morford, for standing up to the lunatic fringe bullies known as PETA. And I am sure your students are thanking you too. Can you just imagine a student having to tell someone, "I am a student at Sea Kitten High School?" (Yeah, actually, I can, after same student has written a tell-all book on the torment endured during his high school years ...or maybe sitting on the couch of his shrink.)

Dog Show Fans to PETA: Leave Westminster ALONE!

One thing all dog owners can do is use the media to our advantage.  When online polls show up, go and VOTE!  The ARs do this all the time; now it's OUR TURN.  Things like polls and commenting on media forums may seem like a trivial thing, but John Q Public READS these things...and that's who we need to reach with our message.  Wherever the ARs show up spouting their lies, WE need to be there too, pointing out their lunatic agenda with facts and TRUTH.

Back in December, the BBC  announced that it wouldn't air the Crufts dog show because of concerns over purebred dogs' health.  Earlier this week, we told you that PETA is asking the USA Network, which broadcasts the Westminster Dog Show every February, to follow the BBC's lead and discontinue coverage of America's most prestigious dog show.

We suspected a lot of you would take issue with PETA's premise: that breeding dogs for the show ring locks in genetic defects that, it argues, plague "as many as one in four purebred dogs ... with a serious genetic problem."  But we were surprised by just how vocal you were:


More than 300 of you have commented on the story so far.  Some of you agreed with PETA. Christine said, "I think it would be great if the USA Network dropped this show. Let's do a special on the USA Network about all the adorable shelter dogs available!" And Carl S chimed in, "PETA is spot on. The AKC is about money and human arrogance, not about what's in the best interest of dogs."


Most of you, though, said the show must go on. "It is a total misconception that mixed breeds are more healthy than purebreds. Responsible breeders routinely screen for health problems. A mixed breed dog has no such testing and can inherit problems from many ancestors," said Janet. And Purebred dog lover mused, "We are now in an era with the animal rightists trying to destroy and discredit breeders of purebred dogs. It must be duly noted that there are no health statistics kept on mixed breeds, just on purebred dogs. Who knows how many mixed breeds die of disease or breed problems gotten genetically from their mixed parentage?"

PETA Bullying USA Network: Don't Air Westminster

PETA president, Ingrid Newkirk, sent a letter to USA Network urging them to not air the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this year.  In part, Newkirk writes:

"Since dog breeders routinely use incestuous inbreeding and genetic manipulation...it's not surprising that as many as one in four purebred dogs is plagued with a serious genetic problem." ...

This latest round of PETA bullying should come as no surprise to anyone.  The Kennel Club (the UK's version of the AKC) and purebred dog breeders were slammed in the BBC's "bash-the-breeder-fest", in Pedigree Dogs Exposed.  As a result, the BBC will not broadcast the Crufts Dog Show.  In the last year, PETA has stepped up its agenda against purebred dog breeders...ESPECIALLY those of us that show dogs.  I refuse to give the link to PETA's blog where they trashed last year's WKC winner, but if you can stomach it, go take a look at their archives.  Bullying USA Network to drop Westminster was the next logical step.

Like Billy pointed out over at Dog Show Poop, what all of us must do now is write letters of SUPPORT to USA Network.    Let them hear from the purebred dog community...there are THOUSANDS more of us than there are Animal Rights fruitcakes in this country.  Tell them how much you love watching, tell them that Westminster is a glorious celebration of the purebred dog and a testiment to the many dedicated breeders.  Just send your letters of support!  And watch the show!
